Our sled dog tours take place in Sweden's southernmost mountain region, in the area of Fulufjäll National Park and the Fedungfjäll Reserve. Sweden's highest waterfall is here, and the area is a vast untouched nature reserve for wolves, bears, lynx, moose and reindeer.

  • Individually designed tour

  • Under the leadership of Hendrik Stachnau for over 15 years, one of the most successful sled dog drivers in the world

  • We are the only operator in Europe offering sled dog tours exclusively with the original sled dogs, purebred Alaskan Malamutes and Greenland Dogs.

7-day sled dog tour itinerary

  • On arrival day, participants get to know the dogs and the equipment. A relaxed welcome dinner with salmon is served in the Finnish Kota over an open fire. We then spend the night at the Wilderness Lodge in rustic Swedish log cabins — wood stoves and candlelight give them a special atmosphere.

  • In the morning we head into the wilderness with our sled dog teams and spend the night in a wilderness cabin, far away from civilisation. Each person drives their own team of 3–4 large, powerful Alaskan Malamutes and Greenland Dogs. These dogs are substantially bigger and stronger than the modern sled dogs most often used for tourist tours today. They have a special presence, a strong personality and are very friendly to people. The route and the accommodation are discussed in the group and adjusted to the guests' wishes. The camp of the Wilderness Lodge lies at around 500 metres altitude. In a day's travel it is possible to reach the treeless Fjäll region at over 1000 metres and enjoy a unique view over the Swedish and Norwegian mountains. Alternatively we can journey through the wild mountain valleys looking for traces of moose and wolves. There are several wilderness cabins we can reach. When deciding on the route, we naturally take the weather into account.

  • On the third day, after a long daily stage, we reach the Wilderness Lodge camp in the evening and spend the night in the comfort of the Swedish log cabins.

  • The fourth day is for recovery. After the first part of the adventure, a relaxed day helps to refill the reserves. Guests can, for example, take a walk with an older Alaskan Malamute or Greenland Dog to a waterfall, simply let their thoughts drift and take in the stillness of the Swedish winter. You can also warm up thoroughly in the rustic wood-heated wilderness sauna.

  • On the fifth day, with fresh energy, we head back into the wilderness. With our dog teams we explore a new, unfamiliar area and in the evening reach another wilderness cabin.

  • On the sixth day we glide with our teams through the stillness of the Scandinavian winter landscape and reach the Wilderness Lodge camp in the evening, where we round off the experience by the campfire with typical Swedish food. Moose entrecôte is prepared over the fire. You can also warm up thoroughly in the rustic wood-heated wilderness sauna.

  • On the seventh day, after breakfast and saying goodbye to the dogs, it is time to depart.

Requirements

Team spirit, tolerance, ability to improvise, normal to good fitness. Participants are expected to contribute to the shared work. Under expert guidance, everyone takes care of their own team.

Accommodation

During the tour we sleep in simple mountain log cabins without electricity or running water, or alternatively in a tipi heated by a wood stove. Before the stove delivers its cosy warmth, it's time to chop firewood. Otherwise, accommodation is at the Wilderness Lodge near Särna. The Wilderness Lodge consists of rustic Swedish log cabins that, with candlelight, torches and fire-heated stoves, create a special atmosphere. We have used this concept successfully for over 15 years — it is timeless and would also have worked hundreds of years ago; there is no permanent electricity here. Four people share a log cabin; two-person occupancy is bookable for a surcharge.

Meals

The food during the tour is based on many years of experience and is suitable for expeditions. At the Wilderness Lodge, traditional dishes are prepared directly over the open fire in a Finnish Kota. Everyone sits around the fire together while the food is served. The preparation of dinner and the shared meals around the campfire are an experience in themselves. Salmon and moose are on the menu. Vegetarian meals are also offered but must be requested at the time of booking.

Weather

The region is considered one of the most snow-reliable in Europe. Winter comes early and leaves late. The clear air is very dry, so you feel the cold less than at home. It is usually sunny, with a strikingly blue sky. Nearly 98 % of our guests described the temperatures as pleasant. 85 % of first-time visitors to Sweden found the winter warmer than they had originally expected. Excellent snow conditions and a magnificent starry sky more than make up for cold nights.

Personal equipment

For winter activities you will need good, warm clothing — preferably windproof and breathable materials. Ski clothing combined with thermal underwear is sufficient in most cases. A headlamp, thermos flask, sunglasses and protective sunscreen should not be missing.

Sleeping bags, overalls and boots for very low temperatures can be rented locally on short notice for a fee. 30 SEK (approx. €3.30) per item per day.
